Sensei Dion Risborg has dedicated over four decades to the practice, teaching, and promotion of traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate.
Beginning his journey in 1980, he has evolved from a determined teenage competitor into one of Australia's most respected karate leaders.
A direct student of legendary instructors including Master Masatoshi Nakayama and Sensei Hitoshi Kasuya, Sensei Dion carries a lineage that connects him to the very origins of modern karate.
His journey is defined not by medals alone, but by a lifelong commitment to growth, discipline, and empowering others.
Today, as founder of Jindokai Shotokan Karate-Do, he shares that passion across multiple dojo locations in South Australia and serves as the WSKF Representative for Australia.
Since competing in his first JKA National Championships in 1982, Sensei Dion has participated in hundreds of tournaments, seminars, and leadership roles across Australia, Japan, and New Zealand. Early highlights include representing Australia at the JKA World Cup in Brisbane (1988) and Tokyo (1992).
As his career progressed, so too did his influence — transitioning from competitor to coach, from tournament director to international seminar host. He has coached state and national champions, mentored instructors, and built a network of dojo committed to preserving the values of traditional karate.
In 2000, he established what would become Jindokai Shotokan Karate-Do — a community-driven, family-friendly, and purpose-focused martial arts school. The name Jindokai (仁道会) reflects a lifelong pursuit of “the way of compassion and humanity.”
He remains a fierce competitor, winning Gold at the 2024 Australian Open in Veterans Kata, while continuing to lead seminars, run national tournaments, and guide the next generation of karateka.
Sensei Dion teaches karate not as a transaction — but as a journey. His classes blend deep technical foundations with life lessons in perseverance, focus, and resilience.
Under his guidance, students learn that belts are not prizes — they are milestones of growth. Winning is not the goal — learning is. And karate is not about fighting others — it’s about overcoming yourself.
“Karate taught me how to fall, get back up, and keep going — and I try to teach that every day.”
Sensei Dion lives by a simple philosophy: “Succeed through the development of others.”
Whether you’re new to martial arts or returning after time away, he invites you to experience karate in its truest form — not just as a sport, but as a path to walk.
