Sensei Dion Risborg is the Chief Instructor of Jindokai Shotokan Karate and a lifelong student of traditional Japanese martial arts.
Beginning his training in 1981, he has dedicated over four decades to the art of Shotokan Karate, studying under internationally respected instructors and refining his skills through continual practice and competition.
A national veteran champion and Australian Open gold medallist, Sensei Dion remains an active and successful competitor. He holds senior black belt credentials recognised by the World Shotokan Karate-Do Federation (WSKF), and regularly participates in elite development programs — a testament to his commitment to lifelong learning and technical excellence.
Dion leads multiple dojo branches across South Australia, fostering a community built on respect, perseverance, and authentic training. His philosophy — “Succeed through the development of others” — underpins his teaching approach, which focuses equally on personal growth and technical mastery.
Beyond the dojo, Dion brings his leadership and relationship-building skills into his professional career as an Account Manager in the construction industry, where he works with many of South Australia’s top residential builders.
Sensei Dion is known for his calm leadership, deep knowledge of karate, and his unwavering dedication to each student’s journey — from complete beginners to seasoned black belts. Whether you're seeking self-discipline, self-defence, or self-discovery, his classes offer a supportive, traditional environment where students of all ages can thrive.
Sensei Dion Risborg embarked on his Shotokan Karate journey in 1981 at a JKA Dojo in Whyalla, South Australia.
Throughout the 1980s, he actively participated in various tournaments, securing victories in numerous State and National Junior events. His dedication and skill were evident in 1988 when he represented Australia at the JKA World Cup, achieving an impressive 2nd place in the Junior Team Kata event.
In 1989, after relocating to Adelaide for work, Sensei Dion founded the 'Adelaide Metro Dojo' in the southern suburbs. Under his guidance, the dojo evolved into one of South Australia's most robust martial arts clubs, producing champions who excelled in State and National Championships. Some members reached the pinnacle by becoming National Team Members, with notable achievements at the JKA World Cup.
The year 2007 marked a significant transition as Sensei Dion moved to the northern suburbs of Adelaide and initiated karate teaching in Salisbury, laying the foundation for Jindokai Shotokan Karate-Do. Since then, the dojo has flourished, boasting over 160 members and training at two premier locations in Adelaide: The Denison Centre in Mawson Lakes and St Columba College in Andrews Farm.
Sensei Dion's karate journey is enriched by interactions with renowned Karate Masters. His training has included sessions with JKA Grand Master Masatoshi Nakayama, SKI Grand Master Hirokazu Kanazawa, and others such as Minoru Kawawada, Yoshiharu Osaka, Tomio Imamura, and Hitoshi Kasuya (as of 2023). These experiences have not only contributed to his technical prowess but have also forged lasting friendships with these karate luminaries.
In recent years, Jindokai Karate-Do has solidified its standing as an exceptionally strong and successful dojo. The accomplishments include a robust group of high-grade Black Belts, a legitimate connection to the birthplace of karate in Japan, well-structured programs for the development of both young practitioners and competitors, consistent success in Karate Competitions at all levels, and a remarkable, inclusive, family-oriented culture. The dojo, under Sensei Dion's leadership, continues to thrive and make significant contributions to the world of Shotokan Karate.
